I first decided to become a filmmaker at fourteen but it wasn’t until I bought my first underwater camera and lighting kit at nineteen that I truly found the joy of capturing hidden worlds and sharing them with others.
Nine years of commercial camera and editing work later…
… I now find myself completing a Masters of Science Communication in Science and Natural History Filmmaking (through Otago University and Natural History New Zealand). Over this Masters period I have focused on the craft of storytelling and the art of bringing information to life using clarity, creativity and entertainment.
Although my eye for cinematic form has always been strong, it is only now that I feel I am on the edge of embracing my own style, one that pushes the boundaries of documentary and fantasy.
Sparked by those first breathtaking moments of seeing the underwater world in all its textural and motional magnificence, I seek to capture the world in all its rawness. Yet at the same time I like control. I like to design the lighting setup, I like to choose the rhythm of movement across a frame, I like to decide how many takes are enough. I like to borrow from theatre, design and illustration. And in this way, maybe I can capture and share something a little deeper than just what passes in front of a lens.
For those of you who came to this page looking for a freelance camera operator, I also love filming for extreme sports, advertisements, educational tools and adventure tourism. Aka I am a gun for hire.
About those nine years:
I trained at Metro Film under Andy Roelants and Ziggie Spath Senior using Arri 35mm and 16mm cameras and the 435 Hydroflex underwater housing rig.
I have a diploma in digital filmmaking through The Southern Institute of Technology, New Zealand
I have a postgraduate Degree in Science and Natural History Filmmaking through Otago University and Natural History New Zealand
And I nearly have a Masters of Science Communication in Science and Natural History Filmmaking through Otago University and Natural History New Zealand
